4 Tips About Caring For Your Hand Knotted Area Rug

Category:

1. Vacuum About Once a Week

Vacuuming this often will help prevent dirt from grinding into the pile of the carpet.

It is normal for new rugs to shed a bit in their first few weeks of use. Frequent vacuuming will also keep this under control.

2. Vacuum Without The Beater Bar

Many vacuums have a brush that they spin to “fluff” carpet and pull dirt from inside it. On machine made carpets this helps get them cleaner. However, with hand knotted rugs the beating can cause some of the knots in the pile to come undone. Usually just setting your vacuum to “bare floor” turns off the beater bar.

It is also best to vacuum in the direction of the pile (like petting a cat in the direction its fur leans). Alternatively, vacuuming from side to side on a rug is better than going against the pile (and doesn't require you to pickup the vacuum).

3. Rotate Annually

Rugs will fade when they are in direct sunlight. Many rugs will fade very nicely and develop different types of beauty through their life. However, they often look better when they fade evenly. In order to assure an even fade you will probably want to rotate the rug about once a year (depending on the amount of sun it gets).

4. Use a Rug Pad

Area rugs often have a tendency to slide around, whether they are on a hard surface or on carpet. Such sliding is a safety risk to people who might trip on it, and can also damage the rug.

Keeping a rug in place is a relatively easy task. Just put a rug pad under it. Hard floors and carpet require different types of rug pads. Your local hardware store or department store will probably have both types.
